Born in Blevio, Como, on March 28th 1944, Alfio Caronti started his career as a professional water skier and in 1964 was engaged as sports equipment manger and water skiing instructor by the Grand Hotel Villa D'Este. In September 1969, he was appointed trainer of the Italian national team for the water-skiing world championship in Copenhagen, where he met Bill Moyes, who was also a team leader. The history of this meeting in hospital and of how Alfio Caronti came to buy Moyes' towed Rogallo wing can be found in the CIVL's FAI Centenary book. Returning from Copenhagen with the delta wing attached to the roof of a friend's car, he immediately set about trying his first flights, towed by his brother Ivan, who took turns with him. He practised tow-and-release for a year. On November 4th 1971, he launched from Monte Murelli, 1240 metres above Lake Como, taking off from the grassy mountain-side with a pair of water skis, and flying for 7 minutes before landing on the lake near Careno. That was the first ever self-launched flight in Europe (and one of the first in the world) with a Rogallo wing. In 1974, with Peter Skaarup, he founded Icaro 2000 factory. In the same year he moved to the United States to graduate in chiropractic. Back home, he has been practising as a chiropractor in Como since 1984.
